How to use it

Weight and mass conversions here run through the gram as the base unit. A milligram is a thousandth of a gram, a kilogram is a thousand grams, and a tonne (metric ton) is a million grams, or 1,000 kilograms. The imperial units are defined by international agreement too: a pound is exactly 453.59237 grams, an ounce is a sixteenth of a pound (28.349523125 grams), and a stone is 14 pounds (6.35029 kilograms) — still used for body weight in the UK and Ireland. The two conversions people look up most are kilograms to pounds and grams to ounces. One kilogram is about 2.2046 pounds, so a 70 kg adult weighs about 154 lb (70 × 2.2046 ≈ 154.3). One ounce is about 28.35 grams, so a 200-gram steak is about 7.05 ounces (200 ÷ 28.35 ≈ 7.05). Because the pound is defined as an exact number of grams, these conversions carry no built-in rounding error — any imprecision you see comes only from how many decimal places are displayed. A common mix-up is between the US ton (2,000 lb, called a 'short ton') and the metric tonne (1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb) — they're close but not identical, and international shipping documents usually specify which one they mean. This converter treats 'weight' as everyday mass measurement (kitchen scales, body weight, shipping weight) rather than the physics definition involving gravity, which is how the units are used in daily life and on packaging labels.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?
About 2.2046 pounds. The exact relationship is defined the other way: one pound equals exactly 453.59237 grams, so a kilogram (1,000 grams) works out to 1000 ÷ 453.59237 ≈ 2.2046 pounds. This is why body weight and luggage limits convert to a slightly awkward decimal rather than a round number.
Is a US ton the same as a metric tonne?
No. A US (short) ton is 2,000 pounds (about 907 kg), while a metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms (about 2,204.6 pounds) — roughly 10% heavier. A UK 'long ton' is different again, at 2,240 pounds. Always check which one a shipping or freight document is referring to.
How many grams are in an ounce?
About 28.35 grams, precisely 28.349523125 grams by the international definition of the pound. This is why kitchen scales and recipe conversions between US ounces/cups and grams almost never land on a perfectly round number — the underlying ratio simply isn't one.
Why does my kitchen scale round differently than this converter?
Most kitchen scales only display whole grams or increments of 1-5 grams, so they round the exact result. This converter shows more decimal places by default since it isn't limited by a physical display — for cooking, rounding to the nearest gram is normally accurate enough.
