How it works
A fraction has a numerator (top) over a denominator (bottom). To add or subtract fractions you first give them a common denominator, combine the numerators, then simplify. To multiply, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together; to divide, flip the second fraction and multiply. This calculator does each step and reduces the answer to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.
Reducing means dividing the numerator and denominator by their largest common factor, so 6/8 becomes 3/4. When the denominator reduces to 1 the answer is a whole number.

- 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
- 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2 after simplifying.
- 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2 (a whole number).
